I now have this, with Oleo, on Natasha Imports NI, a CD titled Eric Dolphy Quartet: Softly, as in a morning sunrise. It gives the date as 2 Dec. It gives the date as 2 Dec. Also released on Magnetic Records (MRCD ), Jazz Anthology (F)JA, Stash CECC, and (J)CEJCMissing: Bee Wamp.

The music on this CD was recorded in (Dolphy died as an undiagnosed diabetic a year later while on tour in West Germany). Dolphy's music was never "a walk in the park" and despite having listened to him for more than fifty years and being an admirer, I find much of his music remains difficult.5/5(6).

Eric Allan Dolphy (J – J) was a jazz musician who played alto saxophone, flute and bass clarinet and was educated at Los Angeles City College. Dolphy was the first important bass clarinet soloist in jazz, and one of the first viable flute soloists in jazz. On early recordings, he occasionally played traditional B-flat g: Bee Wamp.

  1. The music on this cd is comprised of three lengthy originals, and one alternate take, which allow the soloists to stretch out and really burn, and burn they do! It is easy to find recordings of Dolphy tearing up solos on alto sax, bass clarinet, clarinet, or even flute, but it is hard to think of a /5(16).
